Austin, Texas

On the way back from Wimberley we passed through the state capital, Austin. We were only there for a couple of hours, not a long time to form an impression. We visited the Capitol building, an historic hotel and the famous 6th street.

It was Sunday morning, so 6th street was fairly subdued. Church time is probably not ideal to explore a street famous for its bars, nightclubs, live music and wild parties. Nevertheless an aura of the previous night's adventures still clung to the streets and doorways (they hadn't been hosed clean yet).

The state capitol building is such an imposing structure that it's worth standing in the middle of oncoming traffic to take it's photograph.

The front of the building is remarkable enough, but the back is just as impressive.

The 5-pointed Texas star features prominently in the design of the building. Read more about the history of this amazing building here and here.

We also checked out the Driskill Hotel, built in 1886. The building has been lovingly maintained and restored. There are much better pics and information about the hotel on the official site.
