Giant's Causeway, Northern Ireland

The Giant's Causeway is a huge site of interlocking basalt columns caused by volcanic lava cooling slowly and cracking in this distinctive pattern. It's a cool place to visit, and the local guide's colourful story about Fionn mac Cumhaill's granny, whom he turned into stone as a punishment for her drunken carousing, was a particular highlight for me.

Like everywhere else on the North Antrim day, this site too was covered in swarms of tourists. In their defence, it was the weekend, and most of them were foreigners anyway. Nevertheless, I spent a lot more time waiting for people to move out of my shots than I did actually taking photographs.

It's worth going to see the Giant's Causeway, but go on a weekday.

A whole hillside of basalt columns isn't something you see every day.
